Democratic and Christian – how the two souls of Joe Biden have led him to victory.

From one side Donald Trump, former USA President from 2016 to 2020, charismatic man and moved by a strong entrepreneurial charge; from the other side Joe Biden, catholic Christian with a touching and turbulent life. The two political personalities represent the controversial and dichotomic nature of the American people, which is not only sharply devoted to industry and conservatism, but also progressive and against the American status quo. The results of the elections, indeed, highlight that, although the democratic front-runner has won, it is undeniable that Trumpism has not disappeared yet. For this cleavage, it is possible to add the social and cultural phenomenon, inherited by the American secessionist past, which has strongly moved Trump’s last year in office – the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. It is undoubted that those racist events and murders carried out by the American police have had a fundamental role in the the anti-Trump electoral campaign rhetoric. Nevertheless, two umpteenth aspects ought to be included in the analysis of the USA presidential bid: from one hand, the Trump Organization has been charged of tax fraud, from the other Trump himself has repeatedly denied the global crisis, both on the health and economic point of view. indeed, the Covid-19 continues to kill and infect thousands of people in America.

BLM, the Trump Organization and the anti-Covid rhetoric have had a huge impact on Trump’s political figure. A deadly combination for the President who, until few years ago, had promised to “make America great again”. Thus, Trump’s administration has shown some difficulties on different levels: social, economic and health. This has been the moment in which Joe Biden’s presence has revealed to be fundamental in order to give the USA a new face and life.

Biden has, since the beginning, confirmed and underlined the catastrophic impact of the pandemic, which continues stifling the “supercontinent” – thus causing the Wall Street breakdown and the American Health-care System collapse, which already displayed evident leaks. During his path toward the US presidency, the elect-President has been accompanied by two women: his life partner, Jill Biden (formerly Stevenson), and his political partner, Kamala Harris. From the one hand stability, religiousness, reliability, from the other multilateralism, progress, equality. These are the two faces of Joe Biden, today elect-president of the new United States

Climate change and fight against the Sars-Cov-2 virus: the first political steps undertaken by Biden. In the first case, he has soon backed down and expressed the willingness to re-join the Paris Agreement, from which his predecessor had withdrawn. The Paris Agreement had been signed in 2016, during Obama’s administration, by more than 190 countries and it represents the common will to establish a global collaboration in order to deal with the consequences of climate change. However, the Agreement has been abandoned by the States which, under  Trump, decided to take a step back in the fight against the rise of temperatures and greenhouse gas emissions. On the contrary, following the steps of the USA then-president of which he was vice president, Joe Biden expressed the will to re-join the country in the Agreement to keep being the hub of the hottest global issues.

In the second case, Biden has announced his will to come back within the World Health Organization, thus showing the essence of his new idea of America, mainly that devoted to collaboration and unified action. This step represents a meaningful move for the public opinion, the international community and the global organizations too, since it could lead America to rebuilt trust by its partners both on the health side and economic one, these partners indeed were turning their gaze to Russia and China.

Therefore, in the face of this scenario which could be the consequences of the European reality? It is undoubted that the international political scenario, and consequently the European one, is about to change with Biden presidency. He presents himself as a man of cooperation and multilateralism who, through his last decisions, has indirectly declared his will to be again the lighthouse for the European partners. Afterall, this is what the States have always represented for the Old Continent – mainly after the Second World War. The US absence in the international agreements would deprive the international community and scenario of large economic and technical impulses.
